Juicy Grilled BBQ Cheeseburgers, Done Properly

You know the burger. Charred edges, cheese gone properly soft, smoky sauce running down towards your wrist, and a napkin that gave up two bites ago.

If that’s what you’re after, this is a rundown of the BBQ burgers at our Drayton shop: what’s in them, why flame-grilling makes a difference, and how to pick between the single and the double when you’re starving.

Why Flame-Grilling Matters

The patty cooks over an open flame, so the outside chars a little and picks up a smokiness a flat grill struggles to copy. Fat dripping onto the flame sends a bit of smoke back up at the meat too. Every cook does it slightly differently, so no two grilled burgers taste exactly the same, but you can usually tell one from a flat-top burger on the first bite.

It’s also why a grilled patty and BBQ sauce work so well together. Smoke on the meat, smoke in the sauce.

The BBQ Cheeseburger

Flame-grilled beef patty, melted cheese, lettuce, onion, pickles and smoky BBQ sauce on top. That’s the lot.

Each bit has a job. The cheese melts over the patty, the pickles cut through the richness, the onion adds some bite, the lettuce keeps it crunchy, and the sauce holds it all together.

Going Big: The BBQ Double Cheeseburger

If you’re properly hungry, go for the BBQ Double Cheeseburger. It has double beef patties, double cheese, fresh salad and the same smoky BBQ sauce. It’s a lot of burger, so save it for an empty stomach. The fresh salad matters here, because all that richness needs something crisp to push against.

The sauce is the same on both, so it really comes down to how hungry you are. The single suits most people. The double is for skipped lunches and big afternoons. Can’t decide? Go single. You can order the double next time, but you can’t un-eat one halfway through.

Why BBQ Sauce and Cheese Get Along

Smoky, slightly sweet sauce against creamy, salty cheese just works. Add a grilled patty and you get smoke, salt and sweet in one bite. Nothing fancy, which is probably why it’s lasted.

Something Fresh on the Side

A stacked, cheesy burger is a full-on meal, so plenty of people like something cool and crisp next to it. A Garden Salad does the job. A few forkfuls between bites and the whole meal feels more balanced.

Not Feeling BBQ?

Fair enough. The Classic Cheeseburger has a juicy beef patty, melted cheese, crisp lettuce, pickles and tangy burger sauce. The Double Cheeseburger goes bigger with two patties, double cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and signature burger sauce.

For heat, the Spicy Beef Burger comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, jalapeños and creamy spicy mayo. The Double Spicy Beef Burger adds double beef patties, double cheese and fresh salad.

And if you started out wanting a burger and now you’re thinking of a kebab, that happens more than you’d expect. Have a look at our Kebabs Drayton range. A burger is about the stacked patty, melted cheese and sauce, while a kebab leans on marinated meat and fresh salad. Work out which craving is winning, and ordering gets easy.

Make It a Meal

Any burger can be upgraded to a meal with small chips and a can of drink. Salty chips, a smoky burger, something cold. It’s one decision instead of three, which helps on a night when nobody can be bothered thinking.

Ordering for a group? Mix singles and doubles depending on appetite, and put a garden salad in the middle of the table.

Juicy Patties at Home

If you grill at home, a few basics help. Don’t press the patty with the spatula, because that just squeezes the juices into the fire. Don’t overcook it. Let it rest for a minute before it goes in the bun. These are general tips, not a look inside our kitchen. One safety note: beef mince needs to be cooked right through with no pink in the middle, so cut one open if you’re unsure.

Eating It Without Wearing It

A burger with melted cheese, BBQ sauce and two patties is never going to be tidy. Grab plenty of napkins, hold it with both hands, and press it down gently before the first bite. If you’re eating in the car, park first.

Eat it soon after it’s made, too. A burger sitting in its box gets steamy, which softens the bun and cools the cheese. Have the plates ready before you pick it up, not after.

If you do end up with leftovers, get them in the fridge within a couple of hours and eat them within a day. Reheat until steaming hot all the way through, and if you’re not sure how long it’s been sitting there, bin it.

A Word on Allergens

Burger buns usually contain wheat, cheese is dairy, and some sauces can contain egg or other allergens. Every kitchen works a bit differently, so if you or someone you’re ordering for has an allergy or dietary requirement, please get in touch through our Contact Us page before you order. It only takes a minute.

A BBQ cheeseburger is a treat rather than an everyday meal, and that’s fine. If you have a health condition or follow a specific eating plan, your GP or an accredited dietitian is the right person to ask.

Ready to Order?

Pick the size that matches your appetite, add a salad or a meal upgrade if you fancy, and eat it while it’s hot. The char, the melted cheese and the smoky sauce take care of themselves.
